Lia Embil (b. 1995, Turkish-American) is an interdisciplinary artist who seeks to rebuild deep connections with nature through her works across various mediums and environments. Her work observes what it means to be human through interpretations of nature, considering the wonders of the natural world and the circularity and rhythm existent in Earth’s ecosystems, including every living being.
By learning and practicing ancient methods of vocalizing and deriving color from plants to make natural dyes, she works to preserve traditions that give life to culture and to spirit. Weaving together visual, sonic, and somatic languages of nature with those of humans, Lia’s work aims to convey the inherent harmony and wholeness between the two worlds, separated only by the arbitrary distinctions of the confused human mind. Often utilizing found objects and natural materials, her work invites people to rediscover their true nature, igniting the sense of oneness with ourselves and those around us.
Her work serves as a moment to pause and listen, it serves as a refuge for the heart and for the mind. Most importantly, it serves to create space for questions and new ways of being. This work is for the present and for the future, and in this harmony, one may find the contemplation and renewal necessary for transformation.
Lia’s work has been shown at Klapper Gallery (New York), Plaxall Gallery (New York), Queenstown Contemporary Gallery (Tāhuna, Aoteatoa New Zealand), Izole Project (Istanbul), and The Nurture Nature Center (Pennsylvania), and has been published in Tidskriften Staden Literary Magazine, Sustainable Lehigh Valley Magazine, and The Lafayette Newspaper. She has held an artist residencies in Akaroa and Tāhuna, Aotearoa New Zealand and was a grant recipient of NYFA’s City Artist Corps. She completed her MFA at Queens College, CUNY in 2023 as a SPCUNY fellow.
